This was a very interesting topic for me to write about.
You see, I have always had an adverse reaction to so-called 'negative' emotions. I never liked feeling sad, mad or scared. I prefer things to be positive and cheerful – some would say rainbows and sunshine. A lot of this has to do with my upbringing; I grew up in a family who focused on being positive, encouraging and optimistic.
But as we all know, life isn't all rainbows and sunshine. It is difficult, challenging and incredibly hard sometimes. These times inevitably lead to feeling uncomfortable and experiencing negative emotions. This is part of life, of being human.
The challenge therefore is not to figure out how to rid ourselves of these emotions, but to learn to acknowledge, honor, and accept them. To seek to understand what they are trying to tell us. And to harness the power of these emotions to live our best lives.
